Sziget Festival 2027 is set to be one of Europe's most exciting music and cultural events. Located on Óbuda Island in the heart of Budapest, Hungary, Sziget is far more than a conventional music festival. For several days, the island becomes a huge international celebration of music, art, freedom, creativity and culture.
For visitors from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, Sziget is particularly attractive because Budapest is relatively easy to reach by plane, train, coach or car. And perhaps best of all: you can combine the festival with a few days exploring one of Europe's most beautiful capitals.

Sziget describes itself as “The Island of Freedom”, and that philosophy is central to the event. The festival has developed from a relatively small Hungarian gathering into one of Europe's major international festivals. Today, the organisers present more than 1,000 shows across around 50 stages during the festival period.
How Did Sziget Festival Begin?
The history of Sziget began in 1993, shortly after the political changes that transformed Central and Eastern Europe.
Hungarian musician Péter Müller Sziámi and manager Károly Gerendai wanted to create a large cultural and music event where young people could meet, enjoy music and experience a sense of freedom.
The first festival was called Diáksziget, meaning “Student Island”. It was held on Óbuda Island and attracted around 43,000 paying visitors.
The scale was modest compared with today's Sziget. The first edition featured around 200 concerts on two stages, an open-air cinema showing approximately 80 films and dozens of theatre productions.
The organisers quickly realised that the island had enormous potential.
In 1994, the festival celebrated the 25th anniversary of Woodstock with an international programme and became known as Eurowoodstock. Major names such as Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, Jefferson Starship and Eric Burdon appeared.
From that point onwards, Sziget increasingly attracted international visitors and artists.
From Student Island to One of Europe's Biggest Festivals
The growth of Sziget has been remarkable.
The official historical attendance figures show how the festival expanded from approximately 43,000 visitors in 1993 to hundreds of thousands of visitors in later years. In 2018, Sziget reached an all-time historical attendance record of approximately 565,000 visitors. In 2019, the festival attracted around 530,000 visitors from more than 100 countries.
The 2019 edition featured more than 1,000 artists, performers and speakers from 62 countries.
That international character is one of Sziget's greatest attractions. You are not simply attending a Hungarian music festival; you are entering a temporary international city where visitors from all over Europe and the world meet.

For Sziget 2027, the final line-up has not yet been announced. This is worth emphasising in a travel article because the festival traditionally reveals artists in stages.
Based on the history of the festival, visitors can expect a mixture of major international headliners, popular European acts, emerging artists, DJs and alternative performers.
The festival is also much broader than its Main Stage. Music is combined with theatre, circus, dance, workshops, performance art and other cultural activities.
How Many People Attend Sziget?
One of the easiest ways to understand the scale of Sziget is to look at the historical numbers.
The festival has regularly attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors during a single edition.
The record before the pandemic was approximately 565,000 visitors in 2018, followed by approximately 530,000 in 2019.
At the same time, the festival's Main Stage alone can accommodate gatherings of up to approximately 60,000 people.
For first-time visitors, this means that Sziget feels more like a temporary city than a normal festival.
Cheap Flights to Sziget Festival from the Netherlands
For Dutch visitors, flying to Budapest is normally the quickest option.
The first airports I would compare are:
Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS)
This is the most obvious option, but not necessarily always the cheapest.
Eindhoven Airport (EIN)
Definitely worth checking, especially if low-cost airlines operate a suitable Budapest service around your dates.
Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM)
A useful alternative when schedules and prices are favourable.
How to save money
Do not search for only one departure date.
For Sziget, I would compare:
- flying one or two days before the festival;
- returning one day after the festival;
- midweek departures;
- different Dutch airports;
- hand luggage only;
- separate outbound and return tickets where practical.
Festival dates can create a substantial increase in demand, so booking early is particularly important.
Flying from Belgium
Belgian travellers should compare Brussels Airport and Charleroi Airport.
Charleroi can sometimes be particularly interesting for budget travellers because low-cost airlines frequently use the airport.
However, do not look at the ticket price alone. Add:
- airport transfer;
- baggage;
- seat reservation;
- transport to and from the airport;
- possible overnight accommodation.
A €30 cheaper flight is not necessarily cheaper once all additional costs are included.
Flying from Germany
German visitors have an excellent range of possibilities.
The airports I would compare include:
- Frankfurt
- Cologne/Bonn
- Berlin
- Munich
- Hamburg
- Düsseldorf
For visitors living close to the German border, Cologne/Bonn or Düsseldorf may be particularly interesting.
The best strategy is to search several airports simultaneously rather than assuming that your nearest airport will offer the lowest total price.
Is the Train a Good Alternative?
Yes – particularly for travellers from the Netherlands, Belgium and western Germany who prefer not to fly.
Budapest is well connected to the European railway network, and Sziget itself lists train, bus, car, bicycle and plane as travel options for reaching the festival.
The disadvantage is travel time.
From the Netherlands, travelling by train to Budapest is considerably longer than flying. But there are several advantages:
- no airport security queues;
- no baggage restrictions like low-cost airlines;
- more comfortable journey;
- less stress;
- possibility of turning the journey into part of the holiday;
- much lower environmental impact than flying.
For travellers from Belgium or western Germany, rail can become particularly attractive.
My recommendation
If your priority is speed and the lowest possible price, compare flights.
If your priority is comfort, luggage and a more relaxed journey, seriously consider the train.
And for a longer holiday, a rail trip combined with Budapest and Sziget can be a fantastic option.
Where Should You Stay During Sziget?
Accommodation can become one of the most expensive parts of a Sziget trip.
The festival organisers themselves currently recommend several hotels, including The Aquincum Hotel Budapest, which is approximately 2.7 km from Sziget.
For a budget-conscious trip, I would concentrate on Óbuda, northern Budapest and the areas around the Danube, rather than insisting on staying directly in the historic centre.
Budget Accommodation
Attila Hotel
A practical budget-oriented option in northern Budapest.
Its location in District III makes it particularly interesting for festival visitors who want to remain relatively close to Óbuda Island.
Bed-Breakfast Hotel Budapest
Another option worth checking for travellers who want a more economical stay in the northern part of Budapest.
TL Hotel Budapest
A budget-oriented city option that can be considered if you are happy to use Budapest's public transport network.
Mid-Range Hotels
The Aquincum Hotel Budapest
This would be one of my first choices for Sziget.
The festival's own accommodation information places it only 2.7 km from Sziget, making it considerably more convenient than many central Budapest hotels.
It is also located beside the Danube, making it possible to combine festival days with exploring northern Budapest.
Adina Apartment Hotel Budapest
A good option for visitors who prefer an apartment-style hotel.
This can be particularly useful if you want more space or prefer to prepare some meals yourself.
Crowne Plaza Budapest by IHG
A comfortable mid-range choice in a convenient part of Budapest, although it is further from the festival than the Aquincum.
An Alternative: Stay in Central Budapest
There is another strategy.
Instead of staying near Sziget, stay in central Budapest and use public transport to the island.
This gives you the advantage of being close to:
- restaurants;
- bars;
- cafés;
- shopping;
- the Danube;
- Budapest's major attractions.
The disadvantage is the daily journey to and from the festival.
For visitors who want Sziget + a Budapest city break, however, this can actually be the best solution.
Combine Sziget with a Budapest City Break
This is one of the biggest reasons why I recommend Sziget to international visitors.
You don't have to spend your entire holiday on the festival island.
Budapest itself is a spectacular destination.
Buda Castle
Start with the historic Buda Castle District.
The area includes the Royal Palace, historic streets, museums and spectacular viewpoints.
Fisherman's Bastion is particularly impressive, with panoramic views over the Danube, Parliament and Pest.
Hungarian Parliament Building
The enormous Parliament Building on the Danube is one of Budapest's most recognisable landmarks.
Even if you do not take a tour inside, seeing the building from the riverbank is highly recommended.
A Danube boat trip is another excellent way to see Parliament and the Budapest skyline.
Budapest Thermal Baths
After several nights of dancing, Budapest's famous thermal baths can be the perfect antidote.
The city has a long thermal-bathing tradition, and spending a few relaxing hours in one of the historic bath complexes is an excellent way to recover from a festival night.
The Danube
The Danube is at the heart of Budapest.
Walk along the river, take a boat trip or cross one of the city's historic bridges.
For photographers, Budapest becomes particularly spectacular around sunset and after dark.
Great Market Hall
For travellers interested in Hungarian food and local products, the Great Market Hall is worth visiting.
It is also an excellent place to sample Hungarian specialities and buy souvenirs.
A Perfect Sziget + Budapest Itinerary
For international visitors, I would recommend 6–8 days rather than arriving just for the festival.
Day 1 – Arrival in Budapest
Check into your hotel, explore the local neighbourhood and enjoy an easy evening.
Day 2 – Budapest
Visit Parliament, the Danube and central Budapest.
Day 3 – Budapest
Explore Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion and the historic Castle District.
Day 4 – Sziget
Start your festival adventure.
Day 5 – Sziget
A full day of music, art and nightlife.
Day 6 – Sziget
Another full festival day.
Day 7 – Sziget
Enjoy the final performances and atmosphere.
Day 8 – Departure
Have a relaxed breakfast and travel home.
For visitors who want the complete festival experience, camping on the island is another possibility. The festival currently offers camping options, while hotels are better suited to travellers who value a proper bed and quieter surroundings.
How to Keep Your Sziget 2027 Trip Cheap
Sziget itself does not have to be an extremely expensive holiday if you plan carefully.
My budget strategy:
1. Book flights early
Festival dates can push up prices.
2. Compare several airports
Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Brussels, Charleroi, Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn can all be worth checking.
3. Consider travelling by train
Especially if you are travelling with substantial luggage.
4. Stay outside the centre
Óbuda and northern Budapest can provide better value.
5. Book accommodation early
Hotel prices can rise sharply as the festival approaches.
6. Consider an apartment
Particularly for two or more people.
7. Compare hotel + festival packages
Sziget itself offers hotel packages combining accommodation and festival passes.
8. Stay a little longer
The extra nights can sometimes make the journey much more worthwhile.
Why Sziget 2027 Should Be on Your Festival Calendar
Sziget is unusual because it combines several holidays into one.
It is simultaneously:
A major European music festival.
An international cultural event.
A city break in Budapest.
A summer holiday beside the Danube.
